Bill Gates | Success story of Microsoft

Bill Gates and Paul Allen are co-founders of Microsoft corporation. It was founded on April 4,1975 at Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States.

William Henry Gates III (Bill Gates) :

He was born on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. His father William gates II is better known for William Gates Sr. is a American retired attorney and philanthropist. He has written a book "Showing Up for Life: Thoughts on the Gifts of a Lifetime". His mother Mary Maxwell Gates was an American businesswoman who also served for 18 years, 1975–1993, on the University of Washington board of regents.

At the age of 13 his parents enrolled him at Seattle's exclusive preparatory Lakeside School. During school days he became interested in programming the general electric system in BASIC. He built his first program on general electric machine. He met Paul Allen at school and they both worked together for finding bugs in the PDP-10 system belonging to Computer Center Corporation.

In 1970, at the age of 15, Gates and Allen went into business together, developing "Traf-o-Data," a computer program that monitored traffic patterns in Seattle. Gates, Paul and two other students wrote a payroll program for Information Sciences in exchange for computer time and royalties. He also created the program to schedule students in the class.

Gates graduated from Lakeside in 1973. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the college SAT test. He enrolled at Harvard University originally thinking of pursuing degree in law. But he wanted to spent more time in computer lab.

Beginning:

In 1975 the MITS Altair 8800 based on Intel’s 8080 CPU was released. Bill and Paul saw this as an opportunity to start their own software company. He read an article Popular Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800. Gates contacted MITS, the creaters of microcomputer to inform them that he and others are working on BASIC interpreter for the platform. After the meeting with president of MITS he and Paul developed Altair emulator within few weeks to demonstrate on a minicomputer and then the BASIC interpreter.

The demonstration was successful and Paul was hired into MITS. Gates took leave from Harvard University to work with Paul Allen. They named their partnership micro-soft(a blend of "micro-computer" and "software") and a year later trade name Microsoft was registered on 26th of November 1976.  First product of the company was BASIC software that ran on the Altair computer. In February 1976, Gates wrote an open letter to computer hobbyists, saying that continued distribution and use of software without paying for it would "prevent good software from being written."

Gates had an acrimonious relationship with MITS president Ed Roberts, often resulting in shouting matches. Gates clashed with Roberts on direction of business. Due to this in 1977 Roberts sold MITS to another computer company. He went back to Georgia to enter medical school and became a doctor.

Gates and Paul wrote many softwares in different format for other computer companies. In 1979 Bill Gates moved company's operation to Bellevue, Washington (East of Seattle). During this time company had 25 employees and all employees had broad responsibility for all aspect of operations. At the age of 23 Gates placed himself as the head of company.

IBM approached Microsoft to write a BASIC interpreter but Gates referred them to Digital Research as they required an operating system, but the discussions did not go well. So IBM representative proposed using 86-DOS owned by SCP, a operating system similar to hardware similar to PC. After then  Microsoft deal with SCP and became the exclusive agent and later full owner of 86-DOS. After adapting the operating system system Microsoft delivered it to IBM as PC-DOS in exchange for a one-time fee of $50000. Due to major sale of DOS operating system press quickly identified Microsoft as being very influential on the new computer.

The company was reconstructed on 25th of June 1981, Gates become the president and board chairman. Microsoft launched first retail version of Microsoft windows on 20th November 1985.
IBM and Microsoft both created first version of new operating system but their partnership deteriorated due to creative differences. Microsoft has been growing ever since. The software and hardware products have been expanding from Windows OS, Microsoft Office Suites, Office 365, Xbox, Bing, Hotmail, the list goes on.
In February 2014 Bill Gates stepped down as a chairman of Microsoft and assumed a new post as technology advisor to support newly appointed CEO Satya Nadella. In April 2018, Gates announced that he was teaming with Google co-founder Larry Page to provide $12 million in funding for a universal flu vaccine.
Microsoft revenue in 2019 is 125.8 billion USD.
