Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim are co-founders of YouTube. YouTube was launched on February 14, 2005 and video upload option was enabled on April 23, 2005.



Jawed Karim : 


Jawed Karim was born on October 28, 1979 in Merseburg, East Germany. His father Naimul Karim is researcher from Bangladesh and his mother Christine Karim is a German scientist associated with the University of Minnesota as a research professor of biochemistry. During 1980s, his family moved to west Germany. In 1992 they relocated to Saint Paul, Minnesota, US, where he attended Saint Paul Central High School.

He took admission at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, in the department of computer science but before completing the graduation he left the college and joined PayPal. He was one of the PayPal's early employees. Where he met Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. He however completed its graduation in 2004 and enrolled at Stanford University and earned a master's degree in computer science.

Steve Chen:


Steve Chen was born on 25 August 1978 in Taipei, Taiwan. When he was Eight years old he his family moved to USA and settled in Prospect Heights, Illinois.

He took middle education from  River Trails Middle School in Mount Prospect. For freshman year of high school he took admission at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. For final three years of high school he enrolled at Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois. However, he did not graduate from IMSA. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he studied computer science. He graduated in 2002. Steve Chen was early employee at Facebook and PayPal.

Chad Hurley:


Chad Hurley was born on January 24, 1977 in Reading, Pennsylvania, US, to Don and Joann Hurley. During childhood he was interested in Arts and at the high school he became interested in computers abd electronics media.

He graduated from Twin Valley High School (where he was a standout runner of the cross-country program of the school and was its member when it won two of its ‘PIAA State’ titles in 1992 and 1994.), Elverson in 1995 and went on to receive his B.A. in Fine Art from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1999. He was also a member of "Technology student association"(Career and technical student organization). After the graduation he worked at 'eBay' and 'PayPal'.

Beginning:


According to Hurley and Chen concept of you tube was originally inspired from the site 'Hot or Not'.
Another story claims that Hurley and Chen came up with the concept of ‘YouTube’ in early 2005, after facing difficulty in sharing videos of a dinner party that was held at Chen's apartment in San Francisco. However, Karim said that the inspiration of developing ‘YouTube’ came after he could not easily find video clips of two events that occurred in 2004. The events were the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami and the ‘Super Bowl XXXVIII’ halftime show controversy that involved Janet Jackson.

Then they started working together and finally on February 14, 2005 You Tube activated with domain name but site was gradually developed for next few months. This company started with the primary investment of $11.5 million from American venture capital firm, Sequoia Capital, and an $8 million from Artis Capital Management.

Originally the headquarters of the company was located in San Mateo, California.
On April 23, 2005 Jawed uploaded the first video on You Tube name "Me at the zoo". He was at San Diego Zoo. During this time Karim was the adviser of the company. Meanwhile he started pursuing degree from Standford University and at the time of launch he became the informal adviser of YouTube. Due to this role he not only get lower share compared to other co-founders, he also remain unrecognized in public till the time Google bought website for US$1.65 billion in November 2006. Karim received 137,443 shares of stock, which, based on closing stock price of Google at that time, amounted to around $64 million.

Meanwhile Karim delivered a lecture at the annual ACM Conference of the University of Illinois on the history of YouTube in October 2006. During the lecture titled ‘YouTube: From Concept to Hyper-growth. And he became the youngest commencement speaker in the history of University of Illinois.
Hurley became the first CEO of ‘YouTube’ on February 14, 2005. His main responsibility was to look after the tagging and the video-sharing aspects of the website. Hurley held the position of the CEO of ‘YouTube’ till October 29, 2010. You Tube was ranked as 10th most popular website just after a year of launch.
